Back to school events

Going back to school can be a time for both excitement and anxiety for students, so it's a great idea to have a list of back-to-school event ideas you can use to kick the year off right. At the start of the school year, school community activities help new and returning students reconnect after a summer off. These events encourage families to get to know each other and the school staff, and enable the school to engage with the community.

Our list of 21 back-to-school bash ideas offers a wide variety of activities that showcase your school and your students and help everyone in your school community start and renew friendships and connections.

1. Talent Show

A talent show gives students a platform to showcase their abilities — singing, dancing, magic tricks, playing a musical instrument — and have fun in front of their peers.

To add to the excitement, include a panel of judges to score performances and award prizes to top performers. The audience can also vote for their favorite act.

2. Scavenger Hunt

A back-to-school scavenger hunt is a fun way to engage students and help them get oriented for the year ahead. A few ideas:

  • Hunt for school supplies — notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers and backpacks
  • Explore the school by finding the library, cafeteria and gym — great for new students getting familiar with their surroundings
  • Search for supplies needed for specific classes, like a lab coat for science or colored pencils for art
  • Find key school resources like the nurse's office or main office
  • Gather information about classroom rules and expectations

3. Relay Races

Relay races and obstacle courses are a natural fit for back-to-school events — they encourage team bonding and get students moving. Teams can compete in traditional relay races, work through obstacle courses together, or collaborate to solve a puzzle or game.

4. Trivia Challenges

Trivia challenges promote learning, critical thinking and teamwork. Teams compete in a tournament-style format across a range of subjects — history, science, literature, pop culture — making it competitive and engaging for a wide range of students.

5. Back-to-School Fair

A school fair is a great way to showcase the resources and opportunities available to students and families. Invite local businesses, organizations and community leaders to participate — covering everything from sports teams and clubs to local programs and initiatives. It's an easy way for families to make connections and learn what's available to them in the community.

6. School Supply Swap

A school supply swap encourages sustainability and helps ensure everyone has what they need heading into the year. Students bring gently used supplies — pencils, notebooks, binders — and swap them with others. It's especially helpful for students who may not have easy access to everything on their supply list.

7. School Year Preparation Workshops

Workshops on study skills, time management and organization give students practical tools they can use right away.

Study Skills

Cover techniques for taking effective notes, managing time during class and preparing for exams — plus tips on staying focused and motivated while studying.

Time Management

Help students prioritize their time, manage their schedules and avoid procrastination so they can balance school work, extracurriculars and other commitments.

Organization

Teach students how to organize their supplies, schedules and workspaces, and keep track of assignments and deadlines.

8. Student Organization Fair

Giving students the chance to learn about clubs, sports teams and service organizations early in the year helps them feel connected to the school community. Provide clear information about each group — goals, activities, requirements — and consider hosting a meet and greet so students can talk directly with representatives.

9. Back-to-School Concert

Booking local musicians or student performers for a concert is an excellent way to bring the community together and start the year on a high note. Choose a location that's accessible for all attendees — a nearby park, community center, school auditorium or gymnasium all work well. Beyond the performance, consider adding food and drinks, games, or a raffle to raise funds for school programs.

10. School Spirit Rally

A spirit rally builds community and creates excitement heading into the new school year. Start with a theme — even something simple like "Welcome Back to School" with banners and decorations sets the tone. Guest speakers like teachers, alumni and community leaders add inspiration, and student performances, games and contests keep the energy up.

11. Carnival

A school carnival brings students, teachers and the community together for a day of entertainment. Volunteers and staff can set up booths with ring toss, balloon darts, face painting and food stands. It's also a good opportunity to raise funds for clubs, sports teams and arts programs.

12. Family Fun Day

Family Fun Day gives families a chance to bond and get to know each other in a relaxed setting. Inflatable obstacle courses, face painting, carnival games and food stands all work well. Add live performances for extra energy. It's a simple, memorable way to kick off the year and build community.

13. School Garden Day

A school garden day gets families involved in improving the campus together. Families can volunteer to plant flowers, clean up litter and maintain the school garden — creating a more welcoming environment while building stronger relationships within the school community.

14. Technology Showcase

With technology playing an increasing role in education, a showcase helps students and families get familiar with the tools they'll be using. Invite experts to present on digital safety, online learning and productivity tools, and give families time to ask questions and get hands-on support.

15. Ice Cream Social

An ice cream social is a low-key, enjoyable way to bring families together at the start of the school year. Keep it fun with taste tests or simple activities, and consider offering fruit-based sorbets or frozen yogurt alongside traditional options.

16. Open House

Give the traditional open house some extra energy by incorporating interactive games and activities. Families can still tour the school, meet teachers and learn about programs — just in a more festive atmosphere. The student council can help organize activities, and adding live music or food makes the event feel like more of a celebration.

17. Sports Day

A fitness and sports day gets students moving and excited about physical activity. Hold the event on school grounds or at a local park, with relay races, obstacle courses and team games. Adding workshops or demos on exercise techniques and healthy habits rounds out the day.

18. Welcome Picnic

A welcome picnic is a great fit for incoming kindergarten students and their families — giving everyone a chance to meet classmates, teachers and staff in a relaxed environment. Host it on school grounds or at a nearby park, with games, activities and food. A meet and greet with teachers gives parents a chance to ask questions before the first day.

19. Crafts and Games

Hands-on activities like coloring, painting and clay give students a creative outlet and a fun way to reconnect with classmates after summer. Set up stations throughout the school so students can rotate through and try each one. It's a low-pressure way to ease back into the school routine.

20. Sensory Stations

Sensory stations — sand tables, water tables, clay stations — give students hands-on experiences that encourage exploration and help them get comfortable in their new environment. They're especially useful for younger students who benefit from low-stress, interactive ways to meet new classmates.

Managing Events

Once you've planned your back-to-school event, take a few minutes to think about how you'll manage attendance and ticket sales. RevTrak's school event management software can help you sell tickets online for athletic events, school concerts, special event days and more — so you can focus on welcoming students and families back to school.
